The truth about matter: We are all stardust

You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.

And at one point you’d hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.

And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.

And you’ll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they’ll be comforted to know your energy’s still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you’re just less orderly. Amen.

  1. I did not read much of anything here, but, I can tell by what I read that you are probably a ‘thoughtful’ person.
Mrs. Eddy PROVED much of what she said/wrote period!
Physicist’s are ‘proving’ much of what she said, (whether or not they know this.)
I have proven much to my satisfaction in my own life regarding this ‘Science’ – and much needs to be addressed still.
BUT…as in any science we can 1)understand the words and their meaning 2)understand the intellectual ideas behind the words – but the actual ‘UNDERSTANDING’ of the implications and the Principle itself takes more intense study!
This is why so many fail to still UNDERSTAND what Mrs. Eddy means regarding for example the terms ‘mortal mind’, ‘error’, etc.
When someone doesn’t demonstrate C.S. they call it all B.S. well, guess what?
I cannot fix a car, does that mean that auto mechanics is all B.S.?
I can read a cook book , but that doesn’t make me a chef, does it?
It comes down to ‘reasoning’ as Mrs. Eddy mentions in her writings.
If one doesn’t want to seriously and honestly look at themselves and see where their head and hearts are – they will NEVER ‘get it.

    1. Hi Earnest
Sorry you did not read before commenting. But since you live in a blister of belief, such an occupation will only intensify your defensiveness.
Mary did not ‘prove’ very much of what she taught, she never got past the placebo effect, which works if you are CS or not. and that is that somewhere above 90% is the number of illnesses and boo boos that resolve with no medical care. So right there she claims that 90% as being Christian Science, when it is not- it is universally true. Now, about that other 10% of accidents and illnesses serious enough to need intervention, Mary has a crappy record. I can’t tell you how many CSers I know with huge problems on display, like the woman with a gaping, scary-as-hell, hole in her nose, or my sis in law who can hardly walk from pain of arthritis- both lifelong Scientists, class taught, and totally orthodox. And that is just the beginning of the list of unhealed problems in my former branch church.

And don’t tell me they are not practicing Christian Science, they have been totally covered by practitioners, for years.

      1. Interesting reply indeed!
I guess you just omit the scores of ‘healings’ from Mrs. Eddy and others that even medical records and practitioners have agreed were ‘miraculous’!
I will offer one case from myself – an ‘instantaneous healing’ of a severe cold and its symptoms!
First, there is no known ‘medical cure’ for colds – as far as I know – and NONE that work in an instant!!
You may say this was just another ‘placebo effect’ – of which I am well-versed in such things.
But the fact is, as Mrs. Eddy says, and others before and since..ALL IS MIND!
Look at our world – how many things has technology offered us that seems utterly impossible to an uneducated person?
Perhaps you haven’t listened to the likes of Dr. Bruce Lipton?
        Hmmm?
Mrs. Eddy did much more than show placebo effects in her works.
The numerous accounts of first testimony easily puts your claim to rest.
Even William Randolph Hearst (yellow journalist that he was) had to acknowledge that his son was healed with the help of a CS Practitioner of a bowel obstruction that the doctors could not heal!
He even wrote an editorial about it.
A skeptic till the end – but as I always like to say. “It is so wonderful that we are individuals. so that we can believe what we want to believe’.
        I wish you well.

  2. I don’t know if you noticed the quote marks in the post. I did not write this one, but brought it over from Facebook.

In my youth I believed there was more truth in MBE’s claims than I do now. In fact I thought for years that if she were Catholic, she’d be a saint and there would be an order dedicated to her teachings. I actually thought that right up until I started writing this blog. I said it more than once over the decades.

When I wrote the early parts of this blog I collected all the usual sources, pro and con, and read or reread them. I became extremely familiar with the timeline from her birth to death. Every book, pro or con, has a very familiar timeline which all agree on the major dates in her life.

If you were familiar with her history, what she was doing when, there simply is no time or place for her to have done regular healing work. In fact, we know exactly who her first pupil was and when she taught him and why they split up. We know exactly when she found Kennedy, her first successful student, and taught him as they set up shop together. From Kennedy on she never did healing herself, but admittedly gave all that work to Kennedy, who was spectacular at it, making their mutual practice successful. After an outburst of total paranoia, Mary dumped Kennedy and he became the subject of her paranoia and tirades for the rest of his life although countless others also joined the list..

I have read Science and Health thoroughly from cover to cover several times and read all the healings, most of which were added in later editions and do not appear in the first edition of her work.

There is no individual testimonial by anyone claiming a cure directly from MBE herself in a one to one encounter. She had no gift for it whatsoever. Once she got the book published there is only evidence that she taught CS to anyone with the money and no one ever asked her for a healing.
