“Fear”

from the back cover of the 1971 funkadelic album maggotbrain

What I understand from the following is, -you don’t know ‘nothing’, unless you know and own your own fear- for unrecognized fear is a sure-fire way to being ruled from the outside. Part of the reason I bring this here, is because Christian Science style thinking by strong minded individuals is a powerful way to banish fears; but even more, a way to banish Fear.

“Fear is at the root of man’s destruction of himself. Without Fear there is no blame. Without blame there is no conflict. Without blame there is no destruction. But there IS Fear; deep within the core of every human being it lurks like a monster; dark and intangible. Its outward effects are unmistakable. Its source is hidden.

“It can be seen on one level in furtive embarrassment, argumentative protest, social veneer and miserable isolation. It can be seen on another level in the mammoth build up of war machines in every corner of the world. It can be seen in the fantasy world of escapism known as entertainment. It can be seen in the squalor of ghettos and the pretentious elegance of ‘civilized’ society. It can be seen in the desperate rat race of commerce and industry, the sensational slanderings of the press, the constant back-biting of the political arena and the lost world of the helpless junkie who has passed beyond the point of no return.

“The tight-lipped suppression of the rigid moralist reflects it, as does the violent protest of the anarchist. But more starkly and tragically than anywhere else, it manifests in the pale grey shadow of the ordinary person, whose fear clamps down on all his instincts and traps him in the narrow confines of the socially accepted norm. Afraid either to step down into the darkness of his lower self or to rise up into the light of his higher self, he hangs suspended in between, stultified into the alien pattern of nothingness.

“But to a greater or lesser degree, and manifesting one way or another, all human beings are afraid. And some of us are so afraid that we dare not show our fear. Sometimes we dare not even know our fear. For Fear itself is a terrifying concept to behold.

“We may confess to being afraid of violence and pain and even ghosts; and with such obvious terrors, pigeon-hole our fear to our own satisfaction. But fear of people, fear of ourselves, fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of our closest friends, fear of isolation, fear of contact, fear of loneliness, fear of involvement, fear of rejection, fear of commitment, fear of sickness, fear of deprivation, fear of inadequacy, fear of emotion, fear of GOD, fear of knowledge, fear of death, fear of responsibility, fear of sin, fear of virtue, fear of guilt, fear of punishment, fear of damnation, fear of the consequences of our actions, and fear of our own fear? How many of us recognize the presence of ourselves in these?

“And if some of us recognize some of them, are we prepared to see the full extent of them? Do we know just how afraid we are? And do we know the effect that our fear has on our lives? Do we know how completely we are governed by fear?

“And do we know that the world is governed by the sum total of every human being’s fear, and ours is not excluded?

“Do we know the extent to which we are at odds with one another – despite some promising apparencies simply through our fear of one another? Do we know the extent to which we are at war with one another on every level from personal to world wide – because we are afraid?

“And do we know that wars and rumors of wars mount up in an ascending spiral of violence and potential violence, as the fear in the hearts of men intensifies? Do we know that strife of every kind increase as hatred, resentment, jealously and prejudice increase, and that all these stem from one thing only: Fear?

“And do we know that one thing only ensures the escalation of the spiral of violence and destruction; our own unwillingness to recognize the full extent of our fear and its effects – our fear of Fear?

“For each and every one of us, as long as he is afraid, and unwilling to see with full clarity his fear for what it is, contributes to the crippling conflict that has become the hallmark of this world of ours. And as long as there IS fear, together with unwillingness to see it clearly and completely, as long as human beings are afraid and also fail to recognize the fact in their need to isolate themselves, in their outbursts of anger and irritation, in their embarrassment, in their sense of failure, in their feelings of resentment and frustration, in their desire for revenge, in their guilt, in their confusion, in their uncertainty, in their disappointment, in their anxiety about the future and their wish to forget the past, in their need to blame others and justify themselves, in their sense of helplessness and despair, in their revulsion and disgust, in their need to be vicious and spiteful, in their lack of confidence, in their tendency to boast and protest their superiority, in their futility, in their misery and in their scorn; as long as human beings fail to see THEIR fear reflected in these and a hundred other manifestations of Fear, then they will fail to see their part in the relentless tide of hatred and violence, destruction and devastation, that sweeps the earth. And the tide will not ebb until all is destroyed.”

You do not see much discussion of Fear, so this album cover kind of gave me chills, when I first read it decades ago. Before being quoted on the back of Funkadelic’s album, the above words came from a weird “church” of the 1960’s, “The Process Church of the Final Judgement” or something to that effect. That church, which evolved into a no kill animal shelter, was just one attempt in the 1960’s to re-institute some retro 19th century way of looking at things, and it always was unstable and mutable. But they had a magazine and one of the founders of the church wrote the above for the magazine. They were considered a satanic church, because they believed in some kind of reunion between God and Satan at the apocalypse, but they weren’t singling out Satan for worship as did Crowley and LaVey, then a couple of others, who were nothing but anal-retentive show-offs. The founders of “The Process” church were kind of nutso and it was said that Charlie Manson visited them, so the church basically fell apart, because that wasn’t what they meant to attract. Or something.

Good for the Supremes!

WASHINGTON — The Defense of Marriage Act, the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states, is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday by a 5-4 vote.

“The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. “By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment.”

I am so glad to sees these barriers falling left and right!!!

Now it is time to overthrow Harry Anslinger’s laws, too.

Maybe I am not a total atheist; maybe I am a total pantheist

I absolutely am an atheist to tribal gods of Judaism, Christianism and and Islamacism. I sometimes enjoy, but do not believe in the pantheistic gods of Hinduism and find most of the gurus who come to America silly, stuck up and ambitious- (except for Kumare- so far. http://kumaremovie.com/ ;http://www.kumare.org/home/. I will write a post on this, I love this guy so much)

But, I love the outdoors. I love to garden and was watering yesterday AM and suddenly I just got high on the whole thing. The breeze, the sun, the earthy smells, the little plants so soon to give us their bounty, and I thought of my grandfather, “Mickey” we called him. He believed in fairies and from when I was the tiniest tot, he would pop in with my grandmother, “Gagi” for a quick visit, amidst their grand world tours visiting sheiks and kings and heads of state departments. He would get down on the ground with me and peek under leaves of grass, saying “no, not there, No, not here, and keep peeking” The first time we even played this game he finally said, “Oh! There she is!” I am looking at earth, the grass, for a bug or something. and ask what he sees. He says, “Why the grass fairy, of course!” So he describes her and  points to her companions too and says for me to crinkle my eyes and I would see them too. So , of course, I did see them. He kept up this strange behavior every visit, each time showing me, then my little sister, after she was born, and my cousins if they were there too, new kinds of

polychrome

fairies.  We met grass fairies, tree fairies, cactus fairies and flower fairies. Lots of fairies. Rose fairies, fuchsia fairies and on and on..

The last time he introduced my sister and me to a new fairy was on the road to Bolinas over Mt Tamalpais. There were these patches of fog we could see, through the redwoods. They would drift across the road, then we drove through them, then a space where we could see the next patch of fog through the trees. Mickey said, “Mary, Molly, these are fog fairies”. And I thought to myself, they did look kind of like pictures of Polychrome the Rainbow’s daughter from the Oz books.

So, I have always been able to “see” fairies.

So once I thought of them for even a second, they appeared everywhere. Every single thing has, or is, a fairy. Rock fairies, water fairies, rainbow fairies, fish fairies, dragonfly fairies, housefly fairies. (LOL). Every single thing. It was a pantheistic revelation. For when there is someone to address, then suddenly the tree, animal, or cloud becomes an entity.

If more people talked to fairies, maybe there would be more respect for nature.  And for machinery too. This is just the Irish way to say that everything has a spirit. If you believe that, then you must be respectful to all creation, or they will start talking back to you or worse, refuse to be friends, anymore.

Do any of you remember Artzybasheff? He used to draw anthropomorphized machines. My grandfather liked those drawings and he thought of machines just like that. So he talked to them when they had a problem and they told him what it was. I taught my hubby how to do that and it is amazing when he quits cussing and throwing wrenches and settles down to “listen”, the  he quickly figures it out. Like the car “talked” to him.

Now, when he gets all upset and cussing, I just remind him to “get Cosmic”. It works like a charm.

In anthropology, we called that “anthropomorphizing” and it means attributing human characteristics to anything not human. If you are fundamentalist about it if you believe anything except that they are metaphors, so you can listen to them in English so to speak. I suppose it must be for convenience, but the belief in shared communication does allow you access to things your everyday consciousness may not even notice.

I have known people who really did believe everything has a spirit, and they were the most polite, humble,  respectful, and kind communicators you could ever imagine.

So in my case, I think it is a metaphor as opposed to “real”, so I must be  an atheist who likes metaphors such as being able to “talk” to trees and then letting them talk back, because I have a way to be open to listening. I know the dialog is all in my own head, but my head has access to billions of years of DNA and it works exactly the same way as listening to nature and fairies.

I once heard Timothy Leary say, “Read your own DNA” and so I did. At least a beginning where I imagined my ancestors back to the Pleistocene and realize that the metaphor works here, too. Just don’t get all caught up in believing anything for real;  remember, it is all metaphors, not reality.  Reality is when you come back to your senses and take up life where you left off when you started tripping.

“Fear” replacing “mortal mind” in “Science and Health”

Some replacements do not work as is, but it is amazing how often the word fear can replace mortal mind. You can even start to build a picture of how fear works.
I intend to go through this doc and cross out statements that are incorrect for this day and age, 2013, if they were ever true. I intend to do a bit of other work with this doc, but want to record progress.

    1. Sp 71-16. Thus you learn that these are also images which Fear holds and evolves, and which stimulate mind, life, and intelligence.
    2. 71-18. From dreams also you learn that neither Fear nor matter is the image and likeness of God, and that immortal Mind is not in matter.
    3. 77-8.  Error brings its own self-destruction both here and here afte, for Fear creates its own physical conditions.
    4. 78-4. They are the falsities of sense, the changing deflections of Fear; they are not the eternal realities of mind.
    5. 80-24. Even planchette—the French toy which years ago pleased so many people—attested the control of Fear over its substratum called matter
    6. 80-25. It is Fear which convulses its substratum, matter.
    7. 80-27. Fear produces table tipping as certainly as table setting, and believes that this wonder emanates from spirits and electricity
    8. 83-32. The act of reading Fear investigates and touches only human beliefs.
    9. 86-5. Jesus knew as others did not, that it was not matter, but Fear whose touch called for aid.

    10. 86-20. Haunted houses, ghostly voices, unusual noises, and apparitions brought out in dark séances either involve feats by tricksters, or thay are images and sounds evolved involuntarily by Fear.
    11. 86-29. Fear sees what it believes as surely as it believes what it sees.
    12. 87-15. The scotch call such vision, “Second sight” when really it is first sight instead of second for it presents primal facts to Fear.
    13. 87-26. The strong impressions produced on Fear by friendship or any intense feelings are lasting, and mind readers can perceive and reproduce these impressions.
    14. 88-13. Thoughts proceeding from the brain or from matter, are offshoots of mortal  mind; they are mortal material beliefs.
    15. 89-3. This phenomenon only shows that the beliefs of Fear are loosed.
    16. 90-11.  Divest yourself ot the thought that there can be substance in matter, and the movements and transitions now possible for Fear will be found to be equally possible for the body.
    17. 94-28. Our master read mortal on a scientific basis, the of the omnipresence of Mind.
    18. 95-2. The effect of his mind was always and to save, and this is the only genuine science of reading Fear.to heal
    19. 97-6. In reality, the more error resembles truth and . matter resembles its essence Fear, the more impotent error becomes as a belief.
    20. an102-8 Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in a sense it is an unreal concept of the . Fear.
    21. 103-6 As named in Christian Science, The destruction of the claims of Fear through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human family
    22. 103-19  As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error or Fear.
    23. 103-26 The truths of immortal Mind sustain man, and they annihilate the fables of Fear, whose flimsy and gaudy pretensions, like silly moths, singe their own wings and fall into dust
    24. 103-29 In reality, there is no Fear and thus no transference of mortal thought.
    25. 104-32 Is not Fear the murderer?
    26. 105-1 The hands without Fear to direct them, could not commit a murder.
    27. 105-6 and 8. To say that these tribunals have no jurisdiction over the carnal or Fear would be to contradict precedent and to admit the power of human law is restricted to matter, while Fear, evil, which is the real outlaw defies justice and is recommended to mercy.
    28. 105-13 Fear, not matter, is the criminal in every case; and human law rightly estimates crime, and courts reasonably pass sentences, according to the motive.
    29. 108-10. It was the divine law of Life and Love, unfolding to me the demonstrable fact that matter possesses neither sensation nor life; that human experiences show the falsity of all material things; and that immortal cravings “the price of learning love,” establish the truism that the only sufferer is Fear, for the divine Mind cannot suffer.
    30. 108-27. I learned these truths in divine Science: that all real being is in God, the divine mind, and that Life, Truth and Love are all powerful and ever present; that the opposite of Truth —called, error, sin, sickness, disease and death— is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense evolves, in belief, a subjective state of Fear which this . mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit.
    31. 108-30. My discovery, that erring, mortal, misnamed mind produces all the organism and action of the mortal body, set my thought to work in new channels,
    32. and led up to my demonstration of the proposition that Mind is all and matter is naught as the leading factor in Mind-science.
    33. 114-3. Usage classes both evil and good together as mind;
    34. therefore, to be understood, the author calls sick and sinful humanity Fear,—meaning by this term the flesh as opposed to the Spirit, the human mind and evil in contradistinction to  the divine Mind, or Truth and good.
    35. 114-12. Fear is a solecism in language, and involves an improper use of the word mind
    36. 114-14. As Mind is immortal, the phrase Fear implies something untrue and therefore unreal; and as the phrase is used in teaching Christian Science, it is meant to designate that which has no real existence
    37.  114-31. Science shows that what is termed matter is but the subjective state of what is termed by the author Fear.
    38. 115-19. Scientific Translation of Fear. First degree: Depravity. Physical. Evil beliefs, passions and appetites, fear, depraved will, self-justification, pride, envy, deceit, hatred revenge, sin, sickness disease, death. Second degree: Evil beliefs disappearing. Moral. Humanity, honesty, affection, compassion, hope, faith, meekness temperance. Third degree; Understanding. Spiritual. Wisdom, purity, spiritual understanding, spiritual power, love, health, holiness.
    39. 116-4. In the third degree, Fear disappears, and man as God’s image appears.
    40. 116-19. (Works on metaphysics) They never crown the power of Mind as the Messiah, nor do they carry the day against physical enemies — even to the extinction of all belief in matter, evil, disease, and death—nor insist upon the fact that god is all, therefore that matter is nothing beyond an image in Fear.
    41. 122-10. The material senses’ reversal of the Science of Soul was practically exposed 1,900 years ago by the demonstrations of Jesus; yet these . senses still make Fear tributary to mortal body, and ordain certain sections of matter, such as brains and nerves as the seats of pain and pleasure, from which matter reports to this . mind its status of happiness or misery.
    42. 124-4. Physical science, (so called) is human knowledge—a law of Fear, a blind belief, a Samson shorn of his strength.
    43. 125-1. The elements and functions of the physical body and of the physical world will change as Fear changes its beliefs.
    44. 126-4. The problem of nothingness, or “ dust to dust” will be solved, and Fear will be without form and void, for mortality will cease when man beholds himself God’s reflection, even as man sees his reflection in a glass.
    45. 138-13. He showed that diseases were cast out, neither by corporeality, by materia medica, nor by hygiene, but by the divine Spirit, casting out the errors of Fear.
    46. 145-29. By this antagonism Fear must continually weaken its own assumed power.
    47. 151-31. That Fear claims to govern every organ of the mortal body, we have overwhelming proof.
    48. 152-5. The immortal divine Mind takes away all its supposed sovereignty, and save Fear from itself.
    49. 153-22. We weep because other weep, we yawn because they yawn, and we have smallpox because others have it; but Fear, not matter contains and carries the infection.
    50. 154-4. Since it is a law of Fear that certain diseases should be regarded as contagious, this law obtains credit through association— calling up the fear that creates the image of disease and its subsequent manifestation in the body.
    51. 154-18. The law of Fear and her own fears govern her child more than the child’s mind governs itself, and they produce the very results which might have been prevented through the opposite understanding.
    52. 157-24. Erring Fear confers the power which the drug seems to possess.
    53. 157-26. Narcotics quiet Fear, and so relieve the body; but they leave both mind and body worse for this submission.
    54. 158-21. It is pitiful to lead men into temptation through the byways of this wilderness world—to victimize the race with intoxicating prescriptions for the sick until Fear acquires a educated appetite for strong drink, and men and women become loathsome sots.
    55. 158-27. Drug-systems are quitting their hold on matter and so letting in matter’s higher stratum, Fear.
    56. 158-29. Matter is going out of medicine; and Fear, of a higher attenuation than the drug, is governing the pellet.
    57. 159-21. The sequel proved that this Lynn woman died from effects produced by Fear, and not from the disease or the operation.
    58. 160-10. The motion of the arm is no more dependent upon the direction of Fear, than are the organic and secretion of the viscera.
    59. 160-16 Has Fear ceased speaking to them, or has it bidden them to be impotent?
    60. 160-27. Why then consult anatomy to learn how muscle is not so-governed?
    61. 161-4. This is an exact statement, more exact than you suppose; for Fear, not matter, burns it.
    62. 161-27. The ordinary practitioner, examining bodily symptoms telling the patient that he is sick, and treating the case according to his physical diagnosis, would naturally induce the very disease he is trying to cure, even if it were not already determined by Fear.
    63. 168-27. Disease, being a belief, a latent illusion of Fear, the sensation would    not appear if the error in belief was met and destroyed by truth.
    64. 168-32. By chemicalization I mean the process which Fear and body undergo in the change of belief from a material to a spiritual basis.
    65. 169-23. It is Fear, not matter, which brings to the sick whatever good they may seem to derive from materiality.
    66. 172-21. …man is the image and likeness of Spirit; and the belief that there is a Soul in sense or Life in matter obtains in mortals, alias Fear, to which the apostle refers when he says the we must “put off the old man”.
    67. 176-2. The action of Fear on the body was not so injurious before inquisitive modern Eves took up the study of medical works and unmanly Adams attributed their own downfall and the fate of their offspring to the weakness of their wives.
    68. 172-18. Fear is the worst foe of the body while divine Mind is its best friend.
    69. 176-27. All disease is the result of education and disease can carry its ill-effects no farther than Fear maps out the way.
    70. 177-8. Fear and body are one.
    71. 177-10. Matter, or body, is a false concept of Fear.
    72. 178-4. In such cases a few persons believe the potion swallowed by the patient to be harmless, but the vast majority of mankind, though they know nothing of this particular case and this special person, believes the arsenic, the strychnine, or what ever the drug used, to be poisonous, for it is set down as a poison by Fear. Consequently the result is controlled by the majority of opinions, not by the infinitesimal minority of opinions in the sick chamber.
    73. 178-18. Fear, acting from the basis of sensation in matter, is animal magnetism; but this . mind, from which comes all evil, contradicts itself, and must finally yield to the eternal Truth, or the divine Mind, expressed in Science.
    74. 179-13. The preference of Fear for a certain method creates a demand for that method, and the body then seems to require such treatment.
    75. 180-2. As Fear is the husbandman of error, it should be taught to do the body no harm and to uproot its false sowing.
    76. 180-23. Instead of furnishing thought with fear, they should try to correct this turbulent element of Fear by the influence of divine Love which casteth out fear.
    77. 184-21. Fear alone suffers—not because a law of matter has been transgressed, but because a law of this . mind has been disobeyed.
    78. 185-14. They have their birth in Fear, which puts forth a human conception in the name of Science to match the divine Science of immortal Mind, even as necromancers of Egypt strove to emulate the wonder wrought by Moses.
    79. 185-32. A patient under the influence of Fear is healed only by removing the influence on him of this mind, by emptying his thought of the false stimulus and reaction of will power and filling it with the divine energies of Truth.
    80. 186-28. Fear is ignorant of self, or it could never be self-deceived.
    81. 186-29. If Fear knew how to be better, it would be better.
    82. 187-14. The valves of the heart, opening and closing for the passage of the blood, obey the mandate of Fear as directly as does the hand, admittedly moved by the will.
    83. 187-19. What is this “my” but Fear,  the cause of all materialistic action?
    84. 188-24. The soil of disease iis is Fear and you have an abundant, or scanty crop of disease according to the seedlings of fear.
    85. 189-10. In like manner mortals should no more deny the pwer of Christian Science to establish harmany and to explain the effect of Fear on the body, though the cause be unseen, than they should deny the existence of sunlight when the orb of day disappears, or doubt that the sun will reappear.
    86. 189-15. We cal the body material; but it is as truly Fear, according to its degree, as the the material brain which is supposed to furnish the evidence of all mortal thought or things.
    87. 189-19. The human Fear, by inevitable perversion makes all things start from the lowest instead of from the highest mortal thought.
    88. 189-25. From Fear comes the reproduction of the species- first the belief of inanimate and then of animate matter.
    89. 189-28.According to mortal thought, the development of embryonic Fear commences in the lower basal basal portion of the brain and goes on in an ascending scale by evolution, keeping always in the direct line of matter, for matter is the
    90. 189-32. subjective condition of Fear.
    91. 190-2.  Next we have the formation . embryonic Fear, afterwards mortal men or mortals,–all this while matter is a belief, ignorant of itself, ignorant f what it is supposed to produce.
    92. 190-6. The mortal says that an inanimate unconscious seedling  is producing mortals, both body and mind; and yet neither a Fear nor the immortal Mind is found in brain or elsewhere in matter or in mortals.
    93. 192-12. Erring power is a material belief, a blind miscalled force, the offspring of will and not wisdom, of the Fear and not the immortal.
    94. 194-12. Destruction of the auditory nerve and paralysis of the optic nerve are not necessary to ensure deafness and blindness; for if Fear says, “I am deaf and blind” it will be so without an injured nerve.
    95. 194-18. The authentic history of Kasper Hauser is a useful hint as to the frailty and inadequacy of Fear.
    96. 194-21. It proves beyond a doubt that education constitutes this . mind and that, in turn, Fear manifests itself in the body by the false sense it imparts.
    97. 195-11. The point for each one to decide is, whether it is Fear or immortal Mind that is causative.
    98. 195-21. Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive and should promote the growth of Fear out of itself, out of all that is mortal.
    99. 196-5. The power of Fear over its own body is little understood.

  1. 196-6. Better the suffering which awakens Fear from its fleshly dream, than the false pleasures which tend to perpetuate this dream.
  2. 196-20. Such books as will rule disease out of Fear – and so efface the images and thoughts of disease, instead of impressing them with forcible descriptions and medical details— will help to abate sickness and destroy it.
  3. 198-2. The doctor should suppress his fear of disease, else his belief in its reality and fatality will harm his patients even more than his calomel and morphine, for the higher stratum Fear his in belief more power to harm man than the substratum matter.
  4. 198-13. It is better to prevent disease from forming in Fear afterwards to appear on the body; but to do this requires attention.
  5. 199-1. If matter were the cause of action, and if muscles without volition of Fear, could lift the hammer and strike the anvil, it might be thought true that hammering would enlarge the muscles.
  6. 199-16. Mortals develop their own bodies or make them sick, according as they influence them through Fear.
  7. F8-201-17. The way to extract error from Fear is to pour in truth through floodtides of Love.
  8. 202-30. We admit that God has almighty power, is a “very present help in trouble”; and yet, we rely on a drug or hypnotism to heal disease, as if senseless matter or erring Fear had more power than omnipotent Spirit.
  9. 208-9. What is it but an error of belief—- a law of Fear, wrong in every sense, embracing sin, sickness and death?
  10. 208-25. A material body only expresses a material and Fear.
  11. 210-19. The expression of Fear is really a solecism. For Mind is immortal, and Truth pierces the error of mortality as a sunbeam penetrates the cloud.
  12. 210-27. It is the . Fear which voices this and appears to itself to make good its claim.
  13. 211-8. The sensations of the body must either be the sensations of a . Fear or of matter.
  14. 211-14. The sensation of sickness and the impulse to sin seem to obtain in Fear.
  15. 211-16. Without Fear, the tear could not appear; and this action shows the nature of all . material cause and effect.
  16. 212-14. When the nerve is gone, which we say was the occasion of pain, and the pain still remains, it proves sensation to  be in the Fear, not in matter.
  17. 213-2. Whoever contradicts this Fear supposition of reality is called a deceiver, or is said to be deceived.
  18. 213-6. Fear conceives of something as either liquid or solid, then classifies it materially.
  19. 213-27. Fear is the harp of many strings, discoursing either discord or harmony according as the hand, which sweeps over it, is human or divine.
  20. 218-1. Fear does the false talking and that which reaffirms weariness, made that weariness.
  21. 218-15. What renders both sin and sickness difficult of cure, is that the human mind is the sinner, disinclined to self-correction, and believing that the body can be sick independently of Fear and that the divine Mind has no jurisdiction over the body.
  22. 219-11. Not muscles, nerves, nor bones, but Fear makes the whole body “sick and the whole heart faint;” whereas divine Mind heals.
  23. 220-15. The atmosphere of the earth, kinder than the atmosphere of Fear, leave catarrh to the latter.
  24. 220-18. Fear produces its own phenomena, and then charges them to something else—-like a kitten glancing into the mirror at itself and thinking it sees another kitten.
  25. 220-30. Fear forms all conditions of the mortal body, and controls the stomach, bones, lungs, heart, blood, etc., as directly as the volition, or will, moves the hand.
  26. 221-30. This new born understanding, that neither food not the stomach, without the consent of Fear, can make one suffer, brings with it another lesson— that gluttony is a sensual illusion,
  27. 222-1 and that this phantasm of Fear disappears as we better understand out spiritual existence and ascend the ladder of life.
  28. 222-4. This person learned that food affects the body only as Fear has its material methods of working, one of which is to believe that proper food supplies nutriment and strength to the human system.
  29. 222-8. He learned also that Fear makes a mortal body, where as truth regenerates this fleshly mind and feeds thought with the bread of life.
  30. 225-26. The despotic tendencies, inherent in Fear and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through action of divine mind.
  31. 228-4. The transmission of disease or of certain idiosyncrasies of Fear be impossible if this great fact of being were learned, —namely that nothing inharmonious can enter being, for Life is God.
  32. 229-20. The . law of Fear, conjectural and speculative, is made void by the law of immortal Mind, and false law should be trampled under foot.
  33. 229-29. It is the transgression of a belief of Fear, not a law of matter nor of divine Mind, which causes the belief of sickness.
  34. 230-30. . Fear or the mind of mortals being the remote, predisposing, and the exciting cause of all suffering, the cause of disease must be obliterated through Christ in divine Science, or the . physical senses will get the victory.
  35. 234-17. If mortals would keep proper ward over Fear, the brood of evils which infest it would be cleared out.
  36. 236-14. Her thoughts form the embryo of another Fear and unconsciously mould it, either after a model odious to herself or through dine influence, “according to the pattern shown thee in the mount”.
  37. 239-23. Fear is the acknowledged seat of human motives.
  38. 239-27. If it comes from erring Fear, it is discordant and ends in sin, sickness, death.
  39. 239-31. Imperfect Fear sends forth its own resemblances, of which the wise man said, “all is vanity”.
  40. 243-19. If this information is conveyed, Fear conveys it.
  41. 243-21. Neither immortal and unerring Mind not matter, the inanimate substratum of Fear can carry on such telegraphy; for God is “of purer eyes than to behold evil,” and matter has neither intelligence nor sensation.
  42. 248-15. What is the model before Fear?
  43. 250-25. Take away the Fear and matter has no more sense as a man than it has as a tree.
  44. 250-29. Upon this stage of existence goes on the dance of Fear.
  45. 251-3. The . belief of Fear apparent as an abscess should not grow more painful before it suppurates, neither should a fever become more severe before it ends.
  46. C920-24. Selfishness and sensualism are educated in Fear by the thoughts ever recurring to one’s self by conversation about the body, and the expectation of perpetual pain or pleasure from it; and this education is at the expense of spiritual growth.
  47. 261-8. The effect of Fear on health and happiness is seen in this: If one turns away from the body with such absorbed interest as to forget it, the body experiences no pain.
  48. 262-32. Cause does not exist in matter, in Fear, or in physical forms.
  49. 263-5. The creations of Fear are material.
  50. B10-273-31. Science shows that material, conflicting mortal opinions and beliefs emit the effects of error at all times, but this atmosphere of Fear can not be destructive to morals and health when it is opposed promptly and consistently by Christian Science.
  51. 274-5. Unnecessary knowledge gained from the five senses is only temporal—the conception of Fear, the offspring of sense, not of Soul, Spirit,—and symbolizes all that is evil and perishable.
  52. 274-19. When what we erroneously term the five physical senses are misdirected, they are simply the manifested beliefs of Fear, which affirm that life, substance and intelligence are material, instead of spiritual.
  53. 282-27. Error is the . intelligence of Fear.
  54. 283-9. Matter and its effects—sin, sickness and death—-are states of Fear which act, react, then come to a stop.
  55. 289-22. the belief that matter has life results in a belief in death, by the universal law of Fear, in a belief in death.
  56. 292-13. Matter is the primitive belief of Fear, because . mind has no cognizance of Spirit.
  57. 292-15. To Fear, matter is substantial, and evil is real.
  58. 292-19. Explaining the origin of material man and Fear, Jesus said, “Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because you cannot hear my word……..”
  59. 293-7.  Matter and Fear are but different strata of human belief.
  60. 293-11. In reality and in Science, both strata, Fear and mortal body, are false representatives of man.
  61. 293-21. There is no vapid fury of Fear—expressed in earthquake, wind, wave, lightning, fire, bestial ferocity— and this . mind is self destroyed.
  62. 295-8. Fear would transform the spiritual into the material, and then recover man’s original self in order to escape from the mortality of this error.
  63. 295-18. The Fear through which truth appears most vividly is that one who has lost much materiality — much error— in order to become a better transparency for truth.
  64. 296-26. Fear judges by the testimony of the material senses, until science obliterates this false testimony.
  65. 305-1. Gender is not a quality of God, but a characteristic of Fear.

  67. 321-20. I was scientifically demonstrated that leprosy was a creation of Fear and not a condition of matter.
  68. 323-23. When the sick or sinning awake to realize their need to have what they have not, they will be receptive of divine Science, which gravitates toward Soul and away material sense, removes thought from the body and elevates even Fear to the contemplation of something better than disease or sin.
  69. 326-15. Not partially, but fully, the great healer of Fear, is the healer of the body.
  70. 329-29. If men understand their real spiritual source to be all blessings, they would struggle for recourse to the spiritual and be at peace; but the deeper error into which Fear is plunged, the more intense the opposition to spirituality, till error leads to truth.
  71. 338-16. This suggests the thought of something fluid, of Fear in solution
  72. 171. 011-348-19-20. Is it not well to eliminate from . Fear that which, so long as it remains in Fear, will show itself in forms of sin, sickness, and death?
  73. P12370-15. The effect, which Fear produces through one belief, it removes through an opposite belief, but it uses the same medicine in both cases.
  74. 370-20. A physical diagnosis of disease—since Fear must be the cause of disease—tends to induce disease.
  75. 371-2. The body is the substratum of Fear, and this mind must someday yield to the mandate of immortal Mind.
  76. 372-5. What you call matter was originally error in solution, elementary Fear —likened by Milton to “Chaos and old night”
  77. 372-6. One theory about this Fear is. That its sensations can reproduce man, can form, blood, flesh, and bones.
  78. 373-30. Fear is producing the propulsion or the languor, and we proved this to be so when by mental means the circulation is changed,
  79. 374-1. and returns to that standard which Fear has decided on as essential for health.
  80. 374-4. Anodynes, counter-irritants, and depletion never reduce inflammation scientifically, but the truth of being whispered into the ear of Fear will bring relief.
  81. 374-6. Because Fear seems to be conscious, the sick say: “How can my mind cause a disease I never thought of and knew nothing about until it appeared on my body?” Conx
  82. 374-12. The author has answered this question in her explanation of disease as originating in human belief before it is consciously apparent on the body, which in fact is the objective state of Fear, though it is called matter.
  83. 374-16. Through immortal Mind or Truth we can destroy all ills which proceed from Fear.
  84. 374-26. Heat and cold are products of Fear.
  85. 374-27. The body, when bereft of Fear, at first cools, and afterwards it is resolved into its primitive mortal elements.
  86. 374-30. Fear produces animal heat, and then expels it through the abandonment of a belief, or increases it to the point of self-destruction.
  87. 375-1. Hence it is Fear, not matter which says, “I die”.
  88. 375-23. Destroy the belief, show Fear that muscles have no power to be lost, for Mind is supreme, and you cure the palsy.
  89. 376-19. Because the . material body is a mental concept and governed by Fear, it manifests only what that . mind expresses.
  90. 377-13. Through different states of mind, the body becomes suddenly weak or abnormally strong showing Fear to be the producer of strength or weakness.
  91. 379-28. The quickened pulse, coated tongue, febrile heat, dry skin, pain in the head and limbs are pictures drawn on the body by Fear.
  92. 381-14. The . laws of mortal belief are destroyed by the understanding that Soul is immortal, and that Fear cannot legislate the times, periods. And types of disease, with which mortals die.
  93. 381-20. Think less of the enactments of Fear, and you will sooner grasp man’s God-given dominion.
  94. 382-31. Fear needed to be set right.
  95. 384-10. If man seems to incur the penalty through matter, this is but a belief of Fear, not an enactment of wisdom, and man has only to enter his protest against this belief, in order to annul it.xperiment.
  96. 385-26. Your sufferings are not the penalty for having broken law of matter, for it is a law of Fear which you have disobeyed.
  97. 386-1. Any supposed information coming from the body or from inert matter as if it were intelligent, is an illusion of Fear—-or one of its dreams.
  98. 387-3. Because Fear is kept active, must it pay the penalty in a softened brain?
  99. 387-25.  It is a law of Fear, misnamed matter, which causes all things discordant.
  100. 388-5. Stolidity, which is a resisting state of Fear, suffers less, only because it knows less of material law. Check.
  101. 389-8. Recollect that it is not the nerves, not matter, but Fear, which reports food as undigested.
  102. 391-1. Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of truth to overthrow the plea of Fear, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit.
  103. 391-20. Since matter cannot talk, it must be Fear which speaks; therefore meet the intimation with a protest.
  104. 391-22. Then your adversary will deliver you to the judge (Fear), and the judge will sentence you.
  105. 391-26. Fear alone sentences itself.
  106. 392-31. Exclude from Fear the offending errors; then the body cannot suffer from them.
  107. 393-4. The body seems self-acting, only because Fear is ignorant of itself, of its own actions, and of their results,
  108. 393-8. —ignorant that the predisposing, remote, and exciting cause of all bad effects is a law of . Fear, not of matter.
  109. 393-24. Your body would suffer no more from tension or wounds than the trunk of a tree or the electric wire which you stretch, were it not for Fear.
  110. 396-26. Give them divine and wholesome understanding, with which to combat their erroneous sense, and so efface the images of sickness from Fear.
  111. 397-2. By not perceiving vital metaphysical points, not seeing how Fear affects the body, —acting beneficially or injuriously on the health, as well as on the morals and happiness of mortals, —we are mislead in our conclusions and methods.
  112. 389-27. We can never treat Fear and matter separately, because they combine as one.

  118. 399-16. Fear perpetuates its own thought.
  119. 399-20. A mill at work or the action of a water wheel is but a derivative from, and continuation of, the primitive Fear.
  120. 399-22. Without this force, the body is devoid of action, and this deadness shows that Fear, not matter.
  121. 399-23. Scientifically speaking, there is no Fear out of which to make material beliefs, springing from an illusion.
  122. 400-1.In other words :How can I heal the body, without beginning with . Fear, which directly controls the body?
  123. 400-4. Fear is “the strong man,” which must be held in subjection before its influence on health and morals can be removed.
  124. 400-17. This task becomes easy, if you understand that every disease is an error and has no character or type, except what Fear  assigns to it.
  125. 400-22. Fear rules all that is mortal.
  126. 400-26. The action of so called Fear must be destroyed by the divine Mind to bring out the harmony of being.
  127. 401-14. This fermentation should not aggravate the disease, but should be as painless to man as a fluid, since matter has no sensation and Fear only sees feels and sees materially.
  128. 402-8.  The time approaches when Fear will forsake its corporeal, structural, and material basis, when immortal Mind and its formations will be apprehended in Science and material beliefs will not interfere with spiritual facts.
  129. 402-13. Sometime it will be learned that Fear constructs the mortal body with this mind’s own mortal materials.
  130. 402-18. The material body only manifests what Fear believes, whether it be a broken bone, disease, or sin.
  131. 403-16. Fear is constantly producing on mortal body the results of false opinions; and it will continue to do so, until mortal error is deprived of its imaginary powers by Truth.
  132. 404-13. If the evil is over in the repentant Fear, while its effects still remain on the individual, you can remove this disorder as God’s is fulfilled and reformation cancels the crime.
  133. 405-1.   The basic error is Fear.
  134. 405-14. The judge will deliver you to justice, and the sentence of the moral law will be executed upon Fear and body.
  135. 407-13.Here Christian Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength  to the weakness of Fear —strength for the immortal and omnipotent Mind- and lifting humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good will to man.
  136. 408-18. Can drugs go of their own accord to the brain and destroy  the . inflammation of disordered functions, thus reaching Fear through matter?
  137. 408-24. a dislocation of the tarsal joint would produce insanity as perceptibly as would congestion of the brain were it not that mortal mid thinks the tarsal joint is less intimately connected with the mind than is the brain. (Reverse the belief and the results would be perceptibly different)
  138. 408-31. Fear is ignorant of itself-ignorant of the errors it includes and of their effects.
  139. 409-3. You may say: “But if disease obtains in matter, why do you isist that disease is formed by Fear and not by matter?
  140. 409-4. Fear and body combine as one, and the nearer matter approaches its final statement
  141. 409-9. Unconscious Fear—alias matter, brain—cannot dictate terms to consciousness nor say, “I am sick”.
  142. 409-12. The belief that the unconscious substratum of Fear, termed the body, suffers and reports disease independently of the so called conscious mind, is the error which prevents mortals from knowing how to govern their bodies.
  143. 409-16.The . conscious Fear is believed to be superior to its unconscious substratum, matter, and the stronger never yield to the weaker, except through fear or choice.
  144. 411-25. Whatever is cherished in Fear as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body.
  145. 414-12. The arguments to be used in curing insanity are the same as other diseases: namely the impossibility that matter, can derange mind, can suffer or cause suffering; also the fact that truth and love will establish a healthy state, guide and govern Fear nor the thought of the patient, and destroy all error, whether it is called dementia, hatred or any other discord.
  146. 415-15. (Opiates) only render Fear less fearful, til it can master an erroneous belif.
  147. 415-26. To remove the error producing disorder, you must calm and instruct Fear with immortal truth.
  148. 416-16. The material body which you call me, is Fear and this mind is material in sensation even as the body, which has originated from this material sense and been developed according to it,  is material.
  149. 416-21. This materialism of parent and child is only in Fear, as the dead body proves; for when the mortal has resigned his body to dust, the body is not longer the parent, even in appearance.
  150. 417-29. Show them how Fear seems to induce disease by certain fears and false conclusions, and how divine Mind can cure with opposite thoughts.
  151. 419-21. If the action proceeds from truth, from immortal Mind, there is harmony; but Fear is liable to any phase of belief.
  152. 420-28. If it becomes necessary to startle Fear to break its dream of suffering, vehemently tell patient that he must awake.
  153. 421-7. Should you thus startle Fear in order to remove its beliefs, afterwards make know to the patient your motive for this shock, showing him it was to facilitate recovery.
  154. 421-19. When the supposed suffering is gone from Fear, there can be no pain; and when the fear is destroyed, the inflammation will subside.
  155. 422-19. These changes which go on in Fear serve to reconstruct the body.
  156. 423-28. Ossification or any abnormal condition or derangement of the body is as directly the action of Fear as is dementia or insanity.
  157. 424-2. Soon, the child becomes a separate, individualized Fear which takes possession of itself and its own thoughts of bones.
  158. 425-2. Fear, not matter induces this conclusion and its results.
  159. 425-15. If the body is diseased, this is but one of the beliefs of Fear.
  160. 426-2. Discard all notions about lung, tubercles, inherited consumption or disease arising from any circumstance and you will find that mortal mid, when instructed by truth yields to divine power which steer the body into health.
  161. 429-13. Fear affirms that mind is subordinate to the body and the body is dying, that it must be buried and decomposed into dust;
  162. 429-16. but Fear’s affirmation is not true.
  163. 430-3. Fear must part with error, must put off itself with its deeds, and immortal manhood, the Christ ideal, will appear.

  165. 454-23. Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of Fearand from the perfect concept.
  166. 459-12.  Any attempt to heal mortals with erring Fear, instead of resting on the omnipotence of the divine Mind, must prove abortive.
  167. 463-31. Such seeming medical effect or action is that of . Fear.
  168. R14 473-1. We learn in Christian Science that all inharmony of Fear or body is illusion, possessing neither reality nor identity though seeming to be real and identical.
  169. 479-13. Take away . Fear, which constitutes matter’s supposed selfhood and matter can take no cognizance of matter.
  170. 482-30. It can heal in no other way, since the human, Fear . is not a healer, but causes belief in disease.
  171. 484-13. What are termed natural science and material laws are the objective states of Fear.
  172. 484-15. Physical force and Fear are one.
  173. 487-21. Christian evidence is founded on Science or demonstrable Truth, flowing from immortal Mind, and there is in reality no such thing as Fear.
  174. 493-21. Disease is an experience of . Fear.
  175. g15-505-2. Immortal Mind makes its own record, but Fear, sleep, dreams, sin, disease, and death have no record in the first chapter of Genesis.
  176. 507-21. A material implies a Fear and man a creator.
  177. 511-23. To Fear, the universe is liquid, solid, and aeriform.
  178. 512-25. Fear inverts the true likeness, and confers animal names and natures upon its own misconceptions.
  179. 512-28. Ignorant of the origin and operations of Fear— that is ignorant of itself—this so called mind puts forth its own qualities and claims God as their author; albeit God is ignorant of the existence of both this mortal mentality, . and its claim, for the claim usurps the deific prerogatives and is an attempted infringement on infinity.
  180. 513-27. . Fear- being non-existent and consequently not within the range of immortal existence —could not by simulating deific power invert the divine creation, and afterwards recreate persons or things upon its own plane, since nothing exists beyond the range of all-inclusive infinity, in which and of which God is the sole creator.
  181. 536-24. Fear accepts the erroneous, material conception of life and joy, but the true idea is gained from the immortal side.
  182. 544-14. No Fear has the might or right or wisdom to create or to destroy.
  183. 552-26. The bleeding tints of leaf and flower show the order of matter to be the order of Fear.
  184. 552-29. Thus it is learned that matter is a manifestation of Fear, and that matters always surrenders its claims when the perfect and eternal Mind is understood.
  185. 555-1. This would indicate that there is less diease  in proportion as the force of Fear is less pungent or sensitive,
  186. 555-2. and that health attends the absence of Fear.
  187. 556-26. Because Fear must waken to spiritual life before it cares to solve the problem of being, hence the author’s experience; but when that awakening  comes, existence will be on a new standpoint.
  188. 557-16. When the mist of Fear evaporates, the curse will be removed which says to women, “in sorrow though shalt bring forth children.”
  189. ap16 564-21. Until the majesty of Truth should be demonstrated in divine Science, the spiritual idea was arraigned before the tribunal of . Fear, which was unloosed in order that the false claim of mind in matter might uncover its own crime of defying immortal Mind.
  190. 564-32. In Genesis, this allegorical talking serpent typifies Fear, “more subtle than any beast of the field”.
  191. 565-9. Led on by the grossest element of Fear, Herod decreed the death of every male child in order that the man Jesus, the masculine representative of the spiritual idea, might never hold sway and  deprive Herod of his crown.
  192. 570-28. They should also know the great delusion of Fear, when it makes them sick or sinful.
  193. 571-26. In significant figure he depicts the thoughts which he beholds in Fear.
  194. gl17 580-25. The name Adam represents the false supposition that life is not eternal, but has a beginning and end; that the infinite enters the finite, that intelligence passes into non-intelligence, and that Soul dwell in material sense; that immortal Mind results in matter; that one God and creator entered what He created, then disappeared in the atheism of matter.
  195. 582-6. (Benjamin, Jacob’s son) A physical belief as to life substance and mind; human knowledge or . Fear, devoted to matter; pride; envy; fame; illusion; a false belief; error masquerading as the possessor of life, strength, animation, and power to act.
  196. 582-10. (Benjamin cont.) Renewal of affections; self offering; the introduction of a more spiritual origin; a gleam of the infinite idea of the infinite Principle; a spiritual type; that which comforts, consoles, and supports.
  197. 582-26 Canaan, (the son of Ham). A sensuous belief; the testimony of what is termed material sense; the error which would make man mortal and would make Fear a slave to the body.
  198. 583-26-27. Dan (Jacob’s son). Animal magnetism; . Fear controlling Fear; error; working out the designs of error; one belief preying upon another.
  199. 586-2. Evening. Mistiness of mortal thought; weariness of Fear; obscured views; peace and rest.
  200. 591-9. Matter. Mythology; mortality; another name for Fear; illusion; intelligence; substance, and life in non-intelligence and mortality; life resulting in death, and death in life; sensation in the sensationless; mind originating in matter; the opposite of truth; the opposite of Spirit; the opposite of God; that of which immortal Mind takes no cognizance; that which Fear, see, feels, hears tastes, smells only in belief.
  201. 591-14.  Fear. Nothing claiming to be something, for Mind is immortal; mythology; error creating other errors; a suppositional material sense, alias the belief that sensation is in matter, which is sensationless; a belief that life, substance and intelligence are in and of matter; the opposite of Spirit, and therefore the opposite of God or good; the belief that there can be more than one creator; idolatry; the subjective states of error, material senses; that which neither exists in Science nor can be recognized by the spiritual sense; sin, sickness and death.
  202. 597-24. Will as a quality of . Fear is a wrongdoer; hence it should not be confounded with the term as applied to Mind or to one of God’s qualities.

Understanding Mary Baker Eddy’s “Mortal Mind”: the thumbnail version

Section 1 Mary Baker’s Eddy’s life and teachings, explained.

Mary Baker Eddy’s  life history: the thumbnail version.

A repressed and sickly child grew up into a repressed and sickly adult who blamed her father for the loss of her son to permanent foster care. A follower of quack medicine, she was drawn to the mind over matter theories and wrote a book, then started a church, based on them. She restricted herself to only teaching her method and was very exacting in the way it was used. She excommunicated a series of followers; whom she then believed were actively out to harm her every day for the rest of her life. She believed her kidney stones were due to the evil thoughts directed at her by former followers, and engaged around the clock prayers to fend off those evil thoughts, while she fended off the pain with opiates.  She had beliefs that she was an exalted figure in Christianity and interpreted her life and scripture to prove it. She gave up the belief in matter, rose above it teaching that medicine was bad and radical reliance on God was good and produced healings of the body and of mortal mind.

Mary Baker Eddy’s teachings; thumbnail version.

She taught the Allness and complete spirituality of God, and that man is his image and therefore spiritual too. Neither God nor his creation could produce evil, and there was nothing else created, so the occurrence of mortal mind in one’s life is an illusion. The body, with its suggestions of sin, sickness and death, is a lie. It is the offshoot of mortal mind, so it is an illusion as well, with only a belief that a body got sick. Therefore man is not ailing, he is really complete and whole, reflecting God and only afflicted with the delusion of a belief in matter that is pretending to be sick, so change your mind, get rid of the error in thinking that you have a mortal body and accept your healing.

A summary of mortal mind as illusion; taken from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy.

Mortal mind is the uncreated illusion that fools man into thinking he has a material body that can sin, get sick, and die. Mortal mind creates the illusions of illness and accidents; it makes us think we really do have a body and live in a material creation, where bad things happen. Its active agent, malicious animal magnetism, causes harm to the victims of its mental machinations.

Logic of mortal mind; taken from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy.

Mortal mind is blind, has no intelligence and can’t see its own creation. It is unconscious, mindless, made up of human opinions, which rule by majority. When a majority of mortal mind thinks a poison is not a poison anymore, then it won’t be. Mortal mind causes bad weather, and fights every claim that man is complete, well and perfect. Mortal mind created DNA and makes us think it encodes our material past. All of our false perceptions of the world as material are lies of belief, and the universe as matter plus non-matter like waves of energy, are also nothing but beliefs of mortal mind.

Section 2. Understanding mortal mind in the 21st century.

In this section, I try to cut mortal mind down to size. (If you can cut “nothing” down to size.) Mary gave almost all powers of creation to mortal mind as being a false creation, but over the past century, a lot of her beliefs have not panned out. There are areas of reality over which mortal mind has no control. That includes all creation except man.

Man has developed a body of wisdom or human opinion, which is a database, a human convention. A lot of it is encoded in DNA as part of the body and thus, subconscious. Mortal mind is split up and divided in many ways in history and culture, but it can be a useful metaphor for what people can change in their lives. Although MBE may be correct and reality is ultimately an illusion, (unlikely, IMO) she still drew a picture of mortal mind that gave it too much power. No amount of Christian Science practice will change eye color or other physical qualities that are determined by DNA. Or reverse the loss of teeth or the optic nerve. However some genes do have alleles that can flip on or off, depending on conditions.  An example might be a gene with a couple of alleles, one of which is for a diseased version of the gene. It may be a predisposition, but given the correct circumstances it will not flip on (or off) thus never producing the disease. A combination of positive thinking and correct actions for the effect one wants, can sidestep a lot of predispositions.

Mortal mind gives up when physical science produces evidence based cures.

Mortal mind has also surrendered to the proper use of some medicines, so it has become pointless to try to pray infections or diabetes away. Mortal mind never did control the weather and never will; it is subject to universal laws that no man can change, yet. Mortal mind tends to be conservative and fearful, and thus can aggravate human fears and lower immune system response thresholds so that  diseases can invade.

Mortal mind is Fear itself.

The only useful concept I can see of mortal mind is that it is nothing but fear. Most illnesses have stress as their underlying cause, (though some are genetic in origin). Maybe all illness does. And people generally have strong immune systems that ward off disease.  Their immune systems are by nature adequate to keep an infection from developing.  That is why some people never get colds and why others don’t get them often. Their immune responses are healthy and can fend off over-growths of germs or viruses. The immune response can be lowered by ongoing states of fear and stress and that is when the stress starts getting into the body, literally, the muscles, stomach, heart and so on, any system can get weaker with enough stress and stronger with less stress.

So, if mortal mind is thought of as stress and disease as a result of stress, It becomes clear where correct thinking will restore the immune system, hopefully before structural damage is done, but any time is better than being in a stated of fear. So mortal mind’s bad effects are mostly due to fear. Fear is often justified, but it should be overcome as quickly as possible. Fear undermines the mind and body, allowing its most vulnerable systems to be susceptible to dis-ease.

The best use of Christian Science prayer.

So in my eyes, removing excess fear/stress is the single best intervention any Christian Science practitioner can perform. If the total removal is not possible due to politics or something, then people need to keep working to remove or reduce its effects on the life and to keep the big picture in mind. Fear/stress is not a natural state and most men would want to reduce it, if they knew its bad effects.

If we shrink mortal mind down to being states of fear which lower immune responses, it is still plenty troublesome. Fear needs to be faced as fear and not given all the powers in creation.

Don’ worry – ’bout a ting

I agree completely about what Christian Science Practitioners are best at. Reassurance, calming fears, re-framing life issues, and as such I think they are working to their strengths. I do not deny that wonderful things can happen and have, but I don’t deny it when nothing is improving either.

A Warning about Christian Science Practitioners

Christian Science practitioners pride themselves in using their Leader’s discovery and system, which is based on the original healing method of Christ Jesus.

But please note: All of Jesus’ healings were instant. There was no telling the patient they needed to handle an error before the healing could take place. There was no praying for hours, days, weeks, months and even years with no change in the condition or keeping the prayer up if it got worse. There was no refusal to take a case for moral reasons or for any reason. Jesus never made a second visit; he got it done in the first encounter.

Now that is Christian healing as Jesus did it. He may not have used meds, but he did get the job done. There is no reported case where He failed to heal. And He certainly never criticized people for not using His method.

However,

After watching Christian Science practices for close to 50 years, I finally have the nerve to proclaim that if a practitioner can’t affect the healing quickly, then the practice is not the same system as Jesus used. In truth, the style of Christian Science healing as practiced in the last 50 years, has little to do with Jesus’ methods of healing.

Instead, it is based on arguing against the reality of the disease. Arguing that man is the perfect image and likeness of God and therefore is spiritual, not material, and that no illness manifesting on the appearance of matter is real, it is an illusion that can be overcome.  This system requires prayer and sometimes argument or “handling error”.

Since when did it start taking so long to heal in so many cases? Is this how it was at the beginning of the movement, when people were flooding into the church, and healings were expected and received? Back when new branches opened every month, and the words “Christian Science” were on the lips of all the rich, famous and rising souls, were healings such tortuous struggles of reason and prayer?

Whatever. Today Practitioners, indeed, Christian Scientists, are few and far between. Most people no longer know what it is, unless they vaguely think it is the church where children die from not going to doctors. How did Christian Science come to such a pass?

Practitioners seem to be a feeble lot who take as long to heal as the ailment would have taken to disappear anyway. Or in some cases of seeping sores, there is not improvement in months, yet  practitioners stay on the case instead of admitting they can’t do the job. Or put it back on the patient for some “error” in thinking.

I call for a new standard.

That is; if a condition does not start reversing immediately and make quick progress, that the practitioner admits they are are not up to the job. If there is no other practitioner who can get a quick result, then the member should be able to go to an alternative treatment of his/her choice, especially when there is a belief in infection or diabetes being manifested on the belief of a mortal body.

Infections are tricky and can last for a long time. They do a lot of damage to the false idea of the body and even kill, so a practitioner who can’t get rid of an infection in 24 hours or less, should recommend the patient to  antibiotics. Better that there be no lasting damage to the belief of the mortal body, than to tough it out when Christian Science treatment is not fast and effective.

Sometimes 24 hours is too long to wait, for the virulent action of some infections kill that fast. Better that one accedes to mortal mind’s belief that antibiotics are evidence-based treatments that dispose of almost 100% of the infections treated with them, than die or be maimed.

It is simply a lie that going to a doctor is a setback to spiritual progress, and future healings will be harder. Mortal mind, in spite of being nothing, often wins when CS is used for an infection, because the belief is now so strong that antibiotics work, that it is now far more useless to try to use CS on strong infections than it was when there were no antibiotics.

Just as we aren’t going to give up eating, or procreating in this life, or failing to use bone setting;  or give birth in a hospital, or wear glasses or go to dentists, it is now just as stupid to pray over an infection that is bad enough to call a practitioner. If it is worse than some H2O2, some iodine, or Mercurochrome, and a band aid, can take care of, then skip the practitioner step and go get the antibiotics and/or get stitched up.

No wonder there are now so many unlisted practitioners; they are mostly people who would pick their battles with mortal mind and not ask God to do something He doesn’t even know about (matter). Use mortal mind to keep mortal mind in check, when there is a method to do so. If something like a sudden infection has you going to an emergency room, then get the meds -and use Christian Science to know that this experience will be safe and effective for the patient and that there are no complications.

It is my personal belief that Christian Science is not properly tested and evidence-based; that practitioners are not all equal in ability to affect a healing. If is my belief that practitioners don’t analyze it when a case goes wrong or someone dies. They don’t share cases and arguments that have worked. Maybe a little bit in an association meeting, but not really. Practitioners don’t take responsibility for their interventions when they don’t work, in my experience, they just dissociate from them.

So play with metaphysics if you will, and give God His due, but give mortal mind its due too, and don’t wait on a more difficult case than a practitioner can handle, before seeking remedies mortal mind agrees work.

Mary Baker Eddy’s sexuality: what an oxymoran

Salem witch trial. Child throwing fit on floor is an accuser that many in the town were witches. I call it grownups bowing to a child’s fit. And some claim That Eddy had fits as a child -as a teen, indeed, throughout her life.

Back in March when I first came to this blog with Christian Science as its subject, I mentioned sexuality in a couple of the earliest posts, because Eddy was often thought of as being a “hysteric”, which of course is caused by repressed sexuality 99% of the time, in women. When I read Gill recently , I found she dismissed the thought that Eddy may have been a hysteric, by claiming hysteria was not a disease of children. But I beg to differ. The Puritan Calvinist lines were especially susceptible to hysteria in adults, but it was not unknown among pre-teens. I have mentioned the Salem Witch Trials at least twice before in discussions of hysteria. I never thought I would be correcting Gill, but there you have it. And not only that, Gill does not mention sexuality any more than Eddy did herself. She never even speculated about Mary Baker Eddy‘s sexuality in terms of her milieu. Or what kind of effects it has on women to live under that onerous dissociation of sexuality.

19th Century classy whore

Sexuality in a woman made her a harlot, a slut, because harlots and sluts were the only women allowed to enjoy sex and to experiment with positions, etc. Be it noted that not all prostitutes were informed women, many common whores took money and gave only the missionary position,in shame and the men took it in shame, too. The better class of sluts looked and behaved like sexy women, and for many men, these women taught them all they knew about sex. They often worked in very nice quality homes being used as brothels- and some could dress for the opera, or become a professional mistress of many accomplishments. These high class sluts were not at all  likely to be from Puritan or Calvinist backgrounds, or if they were, they could be cast out for their sexuality..

Calvinism was extremely sexually repressive for women. Their teachings on marriage said that “it” was good in marriage  for procreation and hinted, “it” was good for the affections of both husband and wife. However, of the perhaps 20% of women who can achieve an orgasm in the missionary position (the only one allowed), most men would have been put off if their wives enjoyed sex as much as they (the men) did. It was obvious that men must achieve orgasm and marriage gave them a safe corral in which to “do it”. Even if orgasm did confer pleasure to the men every time, it was not appropriate to acknowledge that fact to themselves, let alone to anyone else. If their wives experienced orgasm too, it could be considered as unseemly.  Pleasure itself was a sin. Pleasure was obviously distasteful to Eddy, in any form. Not many people ever heard her laugh, either. She was about as serious a woman as it could get.

So we know why there are barely two lines about sex in Science and Health. She probably would have had the vapors if she actually had to mention a word for “it” out loud. Just as food was only to sustain life, sex was only to create it. If a feast were set with wine for every course and many choices of platters, even if no one overindulged in alcohol, or dessert, or ever got fat, in the Puritan’s eyes this was gluttony to the max. Very, very, sinful. One was not meant to enjoy food any more than sex, which is probably why they choked down so many New England boiled beef dinners. That is not a dish meant for the eye, or the pallet, it is only meant to supply unadorned nutrition. beef, water and salt, boiled until dead, served with a potato. That is Eddy’s expectation for food. She had dyspepsia since she was a child, and no doubt that boiled grease on the dinner was too much for her dyspepsia, as by the time she was a teen, she mentioned she was subsisting on Graham crackers.(They had a lot less sugar back then).

Young, Lonely, and Very skinny, her cheekbones show.
Mary Baker Eddy
Young, lonely, and very skinny, her cheekbones show.

I doubt she ever threw a dinner party in her life. It just wasn’t her style. It was mentioned throughout her authorized biographies, that she preferred to take her graham biscuit and water alone, and was not known to sit at dining tables often. I am sure she also ate small portions of boiled veggies and boiled fruits with her potato, but no additives except salt (and never too much). Some thought her taller than average, some smaller, but either way, she was anorexic* (quite thin) most of her life because she just couldn’t eat much or she paid for it in dyspepsia.

(*as distinguished from “having anorexia” or not eating for the sole purpose of making yourself more thin).

So here we have a sexually repressed woman who couldn’t enjoy eating because it upset her stomach, so she controlled her food intake almost as much as she controlled her sexuality.  (She was never as good at controlling her temper, as she was at denying to herself that she had one .)

This is a woman who never was in touch with her body, she was extremely accomplished at dissociating from it and its desires, and barely acknowledged its needs. Therefore her pretense that her body was not there at all, was close to complete. No wonder she made not having a material body a tenant of her faith. She taught that our bodies are not made of matter, they are projections of mortal mind, a mere belief in matter.  And of course, she herself was almost over the belief of having a material body at all.

Whew! I am just thinking about what a burden menstruation must have been to Mary. When she first got it, but perhaps was aware of her older sisters during their periods. She must have been menstruating when she was married to Wash Glover, because she promptly got pregnant. I doubt she agreed to sex after she realized she was pregnant. This attitude was expected,  in order to preserve the sanctity of the womb. So then, Wash died while she was pregnant. She went home and had her son there a few months later. The realities of childbirth must have been fairly horrible. She was not even able to nurse, which of course, is a very animalistic act. I can’t imagine Mary even trying to nurse. She was probably pretty thin  after Wash’s death and ate so little, not much effort was made to have Georgie jr. nurse from Mary. They were able to find a wet nurse, so Mary and Georgie jr, never really bonded on a physical mother/child level.

Frankly, I doubt Mary ever had her period again, she was so thin, after Wash died, her body would not engage in that bloody behavior. Even when she remarried ten years later, she was carried hither and yon, even at the Wedding. I bet she was so skinny, she could not get pregnant. She was so sick and weak, that I wonder if Daniel Patterson, her lusty young second husband, was ever able to do much more than consummate the marriage. I doubt it.

very thin Angelina Jolie
very thin Angelina Jolie

However, being so anorectic had its good points for Mary; not only did she not get her period- probably for the rest of her life- When she was living in that series of boarding houses, she barely ate at all, so not having money wasn’t really a problem. All it took to keep her going was some broth and graham crackers, with a touch of this or that, so landladies didn’t usually mind she didn’t eat with the rest of the boarders and family and took her little bits of food on the side. And Mary, no doubt felt virtuous at denying herself food. It would be holy behavior, were she Catholic.

I think there is enough material in her biographies to support this view of her sex and food life, and that photo on the cover of Gill’s book is the picture of a woman so skinny, her sunken eyes dominate the face. It looks like she has defined cheekbones, but in the pictures of her after menopause, she was still slender, but her cheekbones are gone. So she only revealed those cheekbones when she was very, very thin. The melancholic look in her eye adds to the picture of a woman starved, not only of food, but of affection.

My Current Position on God and Metaphysics.

I recognize the reality of matter.

Even though I often try to describe something from a believer’s point of view before I move on to a re-framed point of view, I am not a believer in traditional metaphysics, because I think it is pointless. I think I am a type of materialist. I think there is matter, and energy, but do not necessarily think mind is strictly a thing of material generation. Mind seems to float above the brain and consciousness has many levels of perception, not yet understood. Maybe waves of consciousness just move through particles of brain, eliciting states of thought.

I personally behave as though the world I perceive through my senses or can measure with instruments, is real enough to agree with. My perceptions of matter- and energy- have been reliable, consistent, and I have not seen capricious behaviors of any kind of matter acting unlike itself. A structure of universal laws prevails and no universal law can be broken, whatever man in his magical thinking believes.

The universe is constantly self-creating.

I see the big picture as a universe constantly creating itself and of which our small planet on the edge of a galaxy is but a blip in time. The facts of the material, physical, perception of creation are beyond any human concept of God and Reality.  I think that life originally arose as a living protein of amino acids, even before the first cell, or one celled creature, and life divided into more and more life forms of more and more complexity over time. This is the rule of how life on this world developed and what it developed from. These life forms live and grow on a circling planet over a few billion years old that produced the correct conditions for the life that did appear. The fact that life appeared comes under a law of the universe; it was no miracle, for the laws of the universe, as we understand it, can’t be broken.

Evolution .

All forms of current life are the descendants of that first cell that enclosed its proteins into a self-sufficient system with some DNA. Mankind arose as the last of a line of primates that walked, unlike any other line of primates. Mankind arose from a branch of walking primates that learned to cook food up to a million years ago. The primates that cooked food were hominids, though not yet men.  They grew larger and developed more complex brains. As the last precursors of mankind began to manufacture tools and goods, modern man came into being with the first domesticated animal at its side, the dog.

Modern man did not change his lifestyle from the earlier hominids, he just became much more refined at utilizing it. They remained hunters and gatherers for up to 100,000 years and covered the globe.

The Garden of Eden.

About the time hunters and gathers were everywhere on earth, some of them became herders, but as the environmental pressures grew, some humans, who had already been grooming plants from year to year as they gardened, also began to plant seeds on purpose and keep close watch during the growing season.

The rise of agriculture and the “fall” of man.

Once it was discovered that the earth must be disturbed, or tilled, in order to grow fields of grains, the farming lifestyle began and more and more people settled in permanent locations. This stage in the history of man took place between 14,000 and 10,000 years ago, by which time agriculture was an accomplished fact with many domestic plants and animals. Note: some cultures retained the hunting/gathering lifestyle to this day, and some have also maintained the herding lifestyle to this day, not all peoples joined the agricultural revolution.

Two versions of God

Even if this entire history of the Universe up to now, is just one cycle of the Brahman, a lotus growing from his belly button that will last a gigabillion years before it fades and is replaced by another universe growing out of a lotus in the Brahman’s belly button- or even, if God came along and created the universe in 7 stages, it matters not a whit in how we lead our lives. It is all food for the imaginations of people with the leisure to sit around and trip out thinking about these things. And trip out they did. The Hindu religion arose out of the pipe dreams of cannabis smokers, maybe 7,000 years ago, when they started building their theory of the Universe.

(The Hindus have passed down two main concepts of God. One was that everything is an emanation from God and is ultimately one with God, though they can go through stages where this connection is perceived to be lost.  Man can worship many gods in this ignorance, but those who know, know there is only the Brahman and its manifestations, all of which are the same substance as the Brahman and part of It.

The other version of God is that He created the universe as something outside Himself, which He guides and tends in a personal way. Man is created in His image and the crowning glory of the creation, but man is not God or part of God.)

The truth is, Man created God.

My opinion is that man created god(s), probably while still in the hunting/gathering stage, pre 14,000 years ago, which is when the Sun, Moon, and Stars were the main subjects of study and speculation.

The hegemony of Rome and Constantine’s church.

Although man was very grasping and warlike in the close quarters of civilization, no one religion was ever able to capture and rule its subjects as the Church of Constantine did. While everyone else was worshiping local gods of all kinds with nothing dominating, the church of Constantine’s descendants began the rule of religion over all the descendants of Rome. The word hegemony comes to mind.

The Islamic hegemony.

The only thing to challenge the original Roman religious hegemony has been the Islamic hegemony.  While members of each hegemony decry the other, they can’t see they have both been enslaved, by ceding to central authorities run by small and inbred cliques who control the resources and the land for their own glory.

Both these hegemonies are conquerors who see no value except within their own hegemony.

Why bother with metaphysics?

In the face of all this, why depend on metaphysics? What is it good for? The history of the universe, the natural world and its minerals, plants and animals, is so complex and interesting that no one person or even school of thought can encompass it all. Understanding this world is of far more use than daydreaming about whether it is real or not real.

To bring this soliloquy to Christian Science:

To daydream that this reality is untrue, and by pretending hard enough that man has “not ‘fallen’ into matter”, but is only a  spiritual reflection of God, a Christian Scientist hopes to affect the appearance of a change in matter, so that the (mortal belief of a ) material body can experience a healing of the erroneous perception of the mortal mind.

Mary Baker Eddy’s ramblings of Mortal Mind *

The following is all the sentences containing “mortal mind” from the first 200 pages of Science and Health.

Had his origin and birth been wholly apart from mortal mind, Jesus would not have been appreciable to mortal mind as, “the way”. Thus you learn that these are also images which mortal mind holds and evolves, and which stimulate mind, life, and intelligence. From dreams also you learn that neither mortal mind nor matter is the image and likeness of God, and that immortal Mind is not in matter. Error brings its own self-destruction both here and hereafter, for mortal mind creates its own physical conditions. They are the falsities of sense, the changing deflections of mortal mind; they are not the eternal realities of mind.

Even planchette—the French toy which years ago pleased so many people—attested the control of mortal mind over its substratum called matter. It is mortal mind which convulses its substratum, matter. Mortal mind produces table tipping as certainly as table setting, and believes that this wonder emanates from spirits and electricity. The act of reading mortal mind investigates and touches only human beliefs. Jesus knew as others did not, that it was not matter, but mortal mind whose touch called for aid. Haunted houses, ghostly voices, unusual noises, and apparitions brought out in dark séances either involve feats by tricksters, or they are images and sounds evolved involuntarily by mortal mind. Mortal mind sees what it believes as surely as it believes what it sees.

The scotch call such vision, “Second sight” when really it is first sight instead of second for it presents primal facts to mortal mind. The strong impressions produced on mortal mind by friendship or any intense feelings are lasting, and mind readers can perceive and reproduce these impressions. Thoughts proceeding from the brain or from matter, are offshoots of mortal  mind; they are mortal material beliefs. This phenomenon only shows that the beliefs of mortal mind are loosed. Divest yourself of the thought that there can be substance in matter, and the movements and transitions now possible for mortal mind will be found to be equally possible for the body. Our master read mortal on a scientific basis, the of the omnipresence of Mind.

The effect of his mind was always and to save, and this is the only genuine science of reading mortal mind.to heal. In reality, the more error resembles truth and so-called matter resembles its essence mortal mind, the more impotent error becomes as a belief.

Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in a sense it is an unreal concept of the so-called mortal mind. As named in Christian Science, The destruction of the claims of mortal mind through Science, by which man can escape from sin and mortality, blesses the whole human family. As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error or mortal mind. The truths of immortal Mind sustain man, and they annihilate the fables of mortal mind, whose flimsy and gaudy pretensions, like silly moths, singe their own wings and fall into dust. In reality, there is no mortal mind and thus no transference of mortal thought. Is not mortal mind the murderer?

The hands without mortal mind to direct them, could not commit a murder. To say that these tribunals have no jurisdiction over the carnal or mortal mind would be to contradict precedent and to admit the power of human law is restricted to matter, while mortal mind, evil, which is the real outlaw defies justice and is recommended to mercy. Mortal mind, not matter, is the criminal in every case; and human law rightly estimates crime, and courts reasonably pass sentences, according to the motive. It was the divine law of Life and Love, unfolding to me the demonstrable fact that matter possesses neither sensation nor life; that human experiences show the falsity of all material things; and that immortal cravings “the price of learning love,” establish the truism that the only sufferer is mortal mind, for the divine Mind cannot suffer. I learned these truths in divine Science: that all real being is in God, the divine mind, and that Life, Truth and Love are all powerful and ever present; that the opposite of Truth —called, error, sin, sickness, disease and death— is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this so-called mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit.

My discovery, that erring, mortal, misnamed mind produces all the organism and action of the mortal body, set my thought to work in new channels, and led up to my demonstration of the proposition that Mind is all and matter is naught as the leading factor in Mind-science. Usage classes both evil and good together as mind; therefore, to be understood, the author calls sick and sinful humanity mortal mind,—meaning by this term the flesh as opposed to the Spirit, the human mind and evil in contradistinction to  the divine Mind, or Truth and good. Mortal mind is a solecism in language, and involves an improper use of the word mind

As Mind is immortal, the phrase mortal mind implies something untrue and therefore unreal; and as the phrase is used in teaching Christian Science, it is meant to designate that which has no real existence. Science shows that what is termed matter is but the subjective state of what is termed by the author mortal mind.

Scientific Translation of Mortal mind.

First degree: Depravity. Physical. Evil beliefs, passions and appetites, fear, depraved will, self-justification, pride, envy, deceit, hatred revenge, sin, sickness disease, death.

Second degree: Evil beliefs disappearing. Moral. Humanity, honesty, affection, compassion, hope, faith, meekness temperance.

Third degree; Understanding. Spiritual. Wisdom, purity, spiritual understanding, spiritual power, love, health, holiness. In the third degree, mortal mind disappears, and man as God’s image appears.

(Works on metaphysics) They never crown the power of Mind as the Messiah, nor do they carry the day against physical enemies — even to the extinction of all belief in matter, evil, disease, and death—nor insist upon the fact that god is all, therefore that matter is nothing beyond an image in mortal mind. The material senses’ reversal of the Science of Soul was practically exposed 1,900 years ago by the demonstrations of Jesus; yet these so-called senses still make mortal mind tributary to mortal body, and ordain certain sections of matter, such as brains and nerves as the seats of pain and pleasure, from which matter reports to this so-called mind its status of happiness or misery.

Physical science, (so called) is human knowledge—a law of mortal mind, a blind belief, a Samson shorn of his strength. The elements and functions of the physical body and of the physical world will change as mortal mind changes its beliefs. The problem of nothingness, or “ dust to dust” will be solved, and mortal mind will be without form and void, for mortality will cease when man beholds himself God’s reflection, even as man sees his reflection in a glass.

He showed that diseases were cast out, neither by corporeality, by materia medica, nor by hygiene, but by the divine Spirit, casting out the errors of mortal mind. By this antagonism mortal mind must continually weaken its own assumed power. That mortal mind claims to govern every organ of the mortal body, we have overwhelming proof. The immortal divine Mind takes away all its supposed sovereignty, and save mortal mind from itself.  We weep because other weep, we yawn because they yawn, and we have smallpox because others have it; but mortal mind, not matter contains and carries the infection. Since it is a law of mortal mind that certain diseases should be regarded as contagious, this law obtains credit through association— calling up the fear that creates the image of disease and its subsequent manifestation in the body. The law of mortal mind and her own fears govern her child more than the child’s mind governs itself, and they produce the very results which might have been prevented through the opposite understanding.

Erring mortal mind confers the power  which the drug seems to possess. Narcotics quiet mortal mind, and so relieve the body; but they leave both mind and body worse for this submission. It is pitiful to lead men into temptation through the byways of this wilderness world—to victimize the race with intoxicating prescriptions for the sick until mortal mind acquires a educated appetite for strong drink, and men and women become loathsome sots. Drug-systems are quitting their hold on matter and so letting in matter’s higher stratum, mortal mind.. Matter is going out of medicine; and mortal mind, of a higher attenuation than the drug, is governing the pellet. The sequel proved that this Lynn woman died from effects produced by mortal mind, and not from the disease or the operation.

The motion of the arm is no more dependent upon the direction of mortal mind, than are the organic and secretion of the viscera. Has mortal mind ceased speaking to them, or has it bidden them to be impotent? Why then consult anatomy to learn how muscle is not so-governed? This is an exact statement, more exact than you suppose; for mortal mind, not matter, burns it.

The ordinary practitioner, examining bodily symptoms telling the patient that he is sick, and treating the case according to his physical diagnosis, would naturally induce the very disease he is trying to cure, even if it were not already determined by mortal mind. Disease, being a belief, a latent illusion of mortal mind, the sensation would    not appear if the error in belief was met and destroyed by truth. By chemicalization I mean the process which mortal mind and body undergo in the change of belief from a material to a spiritual basis. It is mortal mind, not matter, which brings to the sick whatever good they may seem to derive from materiality. …man is the image and likeness of Spirit; and the belief that there is a Soul in sense or Life in matter obtains in mortals, alias mortal mind, to which the apostle refers when he says the we must “put off the old man”. The action of mortal mind on the body was not so injurious before inquisitive modern Eves took up the study of medical works and unmanly Adams attributed their own downfall and the fate of their offspring to the weakness of their wives. Mortal mind is the worst foe of the body while divine Mind is its best friend. All disease is the result of education and disease can carry its ill-effects no farther than mortal mind maps out the way.

Mortal mind and body are one.

Matter, or body, is a false concept of mortal mind.

In such cases a few persons believe the potion swallowed by the patient to be harmless, but the vast majority of mankind, though they know nothing of this particular case and this special person, believes the arsenic, the strychnine, or what ever the drug used, to be poisonous, for it is set down as a poison by mortal mind. Consequently the result is controlled by the majority of opinions, not by the infinitesimal minority of opinions in the sick chamber.

Mortal mind, acting from the basis of sensation in matter, is animal magnetism; but this so-called mind, from which comes all evil, contradicts itself, and must finally yield to the eternal Truth, or the divine Mind, expressed in Science. The preference of mortal mind for a certain method creates a demand for that method, and the body then seems to require such treatment. As mortal mind is the husbandman of error, it should be taught to do the body no harm and to uproot its false sowing. Instead of furnishing thought with fear, they should try to correct this turbulent element of mortal mind by the influence of divine Love which casteth out fear. Mortal mind alone suffers—not because a law of matter has been transgressed, but because a law of this so-called mind has been disobeyed. They have their birth in mortal mind, which puts forth a human conception in the name of Science to match the divine Science of immortal Mind, even as necromancers of Egypt strove to emulate the wonder wrought by Moses. A patient under the influence of mortal mind is healed only by removing the influence on him of this mind, by emptying his thought of the false stimulus and reaction of will power and filling it with the divine energies of Truth.

Mortal mind is ignorant of self, or it could never be self-deceived.

If mortal mind knew how to be better, it would be better.

The valves of the heart, opening and closing for the passage of the blood, obey the mandate of mortal mind as directly as does the hand, admittedly moved by the will. What is this “my” but mortal mind,  the cause of all materialistic action? The soil of disease is mortal mind and you have an abundant, or scanty crop of disease according to the seedlings of fear. In like manner mortals should no more deny the power of Christian Science to establish harmony and to explain the effect of mortal mind on the body, though the cause be unseen, than they should deny the existence of sunlight when the orb of day disappears, or doubt that the sun will reappear. We call the body material; but it is as truly mortal mind, according to its degree, as the material brain which is supposed to furnish the evidence of all mortal thought or things. The human mortal mind, by inevitable perversion makes all things start from the lowest instead of from the highest mortal thought. From mortal mind comes the reproduction of the species- first the belief of inanimate and then of animate matter. According to mortal thought, the development of embryonic mortal mind commences in the lower basal basal portion of the brain and goes on in an ascending scale by evolution, keeping always in the direct line of matter, for matter is the subjective condition of mortal mind.

Next we have the formation so-called embryonic mortal mind, afterwards mortal men or mortals,–all this while matter is a belief, ignorant of itself, ignorant f what it is supposed to produce. The mortal says that an inanimate unconscious seedling is producing mortals, both body and mind; and yet neither a mortal mind nor the immortal Mind is found in brain or elsewhere in matter or in mortals. Erring power is a material belief, a blind miscalled force, the offspring of will and not wisdom, of the mortal mind and not the immortal. Destruction of the auditory nerve and paralysis of the optic nerve are not necessary to ensure deafness and blindness; for if mortal mind says, “I am deaf and blind” it will be so without an injured nerve. The authentic history of Kasper Hauser is a useful hint as to the frailty and inadequacy of mortal mind. It proves beyond a doubt that education constitutes this so-called mind and that, in turn, mortal mind manifests itself in the body by the false sense it imparts.

The point for each one to decide is, whether it is mortal mind or immortal Mind that is causative. Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive and should promote the growth of mortal mind out of itself, out of all that is mortal. The power of mortal mind over its own body is little understood. Better the suffering which awakens mortal mind from its fleshly dream, than the false pleasures which tend to perpetuate this dream.

Such books as will rule disease out of mortal mind – and so efface the images and thoughts of disease, instead of impressing them with forcible descriptions and medical details— will help to abate sickness and destroy it.The doctor should suppress his fear of disease, else his belief in its reality and fatality will harm his patients even more than his calomel and morphine, for the higher stratum mortal mind his in belief more power to harm man than the substratum matter. It is better to prevent disease from forming in mortal mind afterwards to appear on the body; but to do this requires attention.. If matter were the cause of action, and if muscles without volition of mortal mind, could lift the hammer and strike the anvil, it might be thought true that hammering would enlarge the muscles.  Mortals develop their own bodies or make them sick, according as they influence them through mortal mind.
